Beach Clean-Up Oneroa-a-Tōhē / 90 Mile Beach

A CBEC Ecosolutions event - you can earn timecredits by helping! Contact Jo Shanks jo@cbec.co.nz for more info/offers of specific help etc.

"Te Oneroa-a-Tōhē is our taonga and needs our love. The sea provides our kaimoana, the beach is our playground. Waste from fishing boats, carried in by currents, even some plastic all the way from Africa, (and some from locals) is on our beach. No paid organisation is tasked to clean 90 Mile Beach, its up to us. As kaitiaki we must maintain our beach. Do we want kaimoana that isn't poisoned by microplastics? Do you want your tamariki to be able to play on a clean beach? Last year we filled a container with beach rubbish, this year we would love to clean right to the top to respect our sacred treasure and preserve her.

We hope to have have co-ordination groups at Waipapakauri, Foreshore Road Ahipara and Hukatere on ramp; (let Jo know if you can help with this).

We believe we will not be able to get up the main beach from Ahipara on the morning, and recommend starting from the northern on-ramps and ending at Ahipara, as we should be able to get around the rocks by 2pm.

There will also be a drop off point at the Houhora Transfer station. We will also be asking Northland Waste for a skip at Waipapakauri ramp…

UPDATE 15/11/19:

Good news bad news good news!
We have free disposal thanks to FNDC once again, but Northland Waste aren't keen on getting too much waste in the Houhora or Ahipara stations and asked us to drop at Katiaia...I will be handing out bags at the Ahipara start, Candace at Waipapakauri, and hopefully Natasha at Hukatere, and send folks up the beach...the most litter seems to be up above Hukatere, where the middens are, and in any flat areas between dunes.
The Mussell spat dudes are doing above the bluff, DoC above hukatere, DoC would welcome help.
The Mussell guys will also remove a burnt out car wreck before the day!

We will have a truck at the Waipapakauri ramp, thanks to the mussell spat guys, that will take the litter to Kaitaia, we will hold a end of clean up bbq from 1 at Waipapkauri.. all crews will be off the beach before 2.30
Thanks for supporting kaitiaki in Northland.
